We found this amazing blog entry that details the history of Japanese trowels. In our plastering jobs, we use trowels extensively, and own a variety of kinds. I often find that the Japanese trowels have a better feel, balance, and usability than others in our quiver. Maybe that’s because the history of the Japanese trowel (and carpentry tools) involves former Samurai sword makers!
The history of the Japanese trowel and Japanese plastering does explain why these tools are often the best. They make a variety of sizes, shapes, and materials for all sorts of plaster applications. I love that some of our tools are make by skilled craftspeople following a tradition that dates back thousands of years.
